Health

In the wake of insurgency, displacement, and deep poverty, access to healthcare remains one of the most pressing needs in northeastern Nigeria β€” especially for women and children. For many, even the most basic services are out of reach.

At Wahatana Empowerment Initiative (WEI), we are bridging that gap by bringing life-saving, people-centered healthcare directly to those who need it most.

The health crisis in numbers

  • πŸ₯ Millions of Nigerians in conflict-affected regions lack access to essential health services.

  • πŸ§• Women and girls face high risks of gender-based violence (GBV) with limited support systems in place.

  • πŸ‘Ά Displaced families suffer from poor nutrition, sanitation, and maternal health services.

  • 🚫 Mental health and psychosocial support are critically underfunded and underserved.

Without timely interventions, the health crisis only worsens β€” leading to preventable deaths, trauma, and long-term suffering.

Our Response: Health With Humanity

At WEI, we believe health is not a luxury β€” it’s a human right. Our approach goes beyond treatment; it’s about healing the whole person, restoring dignity, and strengthening the systems that keep people safe and well.

Β

What We’re Doing
πŸ’Š Mobile & Community-Based Health Services

We bring health services directly to underserved communities, focusing on displaced populations, rural women, and children. Through mobile clinics and local health partners, we offer:

  • Basic medical consultations

  • Maternal and child health services

  • Distribution of hygiene kits and mosquito nets

  • Vaccination outreach and health education

  • βœ… 5,000+ families supported through COVID-19 relief with hygiene kits

  • 🦟 3,500 mosquito nets distributed to prevent malaria in vulnerable households

Β

🧠 Psychosocial Support & Trauma Healing

Conflict and displacement leave invisible wounds. We train community leaders and caregivers to provide psychosocial first aid, helping survivors of trauma β€” especially children and women β€” begin the journey of emotional recovery.

  • πŸ§‘β€πŸ€β€πŸ§‘ 150+ community leaders trained in psychosocial support

  • 🧘 Ongoing counseling and emotional wellness sessions in conflict-affected communities

Β

🚺 Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Response

WEI is actively responding to GBV through awareness campaigns, survivor support, and safe referrals. We work to:

  • Provide confidential support to survivors

  • Train frontline workers in trauma-informed care

  • Advocate for stronger community protection systems

  • Mobilize men and boys as allies in prevention

Β

🌿 Integrating Health With Other Programs

We integrate health with education, nutrition, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) to address multiple risks at once. Children in school receive health talks; women in entrepreneurship programs receive menstrual hygiene kits and maternal care info.

Β

Our Approach
  • Community-rooted – We work with local volunteers and leaders to deliver culturally relevant care.

  • Mobile and agile – We bring services to the doorstep of those in hard-to-reach or crisis-hit areas.

  • Holistic and dignified – We treat individuals as whole people, not statistics.

  • Women-centered – We put women’s voices and needs at the core of all health decisions.
