- Who We Are
Empowering Lives. Rebuilding Futures. Creating Lasting Change.
Wahatana Empowerment Initiative (WEI) is a nonprofit humanitarian organization based in northeastern Nigeria, committed to transforming the lives of vulnerable women and children affected by insurgency, displacement, poverty, and climate-related crises.
Founded in April 2020, WEI emerged in response to one of Nigeria’s most urgent humanitarian emergencies — providing timely, strategic, and compassionate interventions in communities often overlooked and underserved. Since our inception, we have remained steadfast in our mission: to empower, uplift, and restore dignity to those who need it most.

Our mission
To empower vulnerable women and children in northeastern Nigeria by providing life-saving support, fostering resilience, and creating opportunities for sustainable growth through education, health, safety, economic empowerment, and environmental sustainability.
Our vision
A thriving society where empowered women and children overcome adversity, live with
dignity, and contribute meaningfully to a sustainable, equitable, and resilient future.
Our Values
Since launching, WEI has reached over 12,000 beneficiaries, including:
- 1,200+ children enrolled in school.
1,800+ women supported with business grants.
50,000+ trees planted under our Greening Yola project.
- 8,000+ hygiene kits distributed.
We don’t just serve communities — we partner with them to build lasting, local resilience.

Our Core Values
our work is deeply rooted in the values that guide every step we take, every program we deliver, and every life we touch. These values are not just words — they define our identity, shape our culture, and reflect our unwavering commitment to serving vulnerable communities with integrity, empathy, and excellence.
Below are the core values by which we operate as an organisation:
1. Dedication
We are committed to meaningful impact.
Dedication is at the heart of everything we do. In the face of conflict, poverty, and displacement, we remain steadfast in our mission to uplift the most vulnerable — especially women and children. Our teams go the extra mile, often in hard-to-reach areas, because we believe every life matters and every person deserves the chance to thrive.
2. Resourcefulness
We find innovative solutions in every challenge.
Working in humanitarian and development contexts often means navigating limited resources and complex environments. That’s why we embrace creativity and adaptability. From utilizing blockchain technology for transparent scholarship distribution to developing digital savings groups for women, we use innovation to drive practical, scalable solutions.
3. Work Ethic
We lead with diligence, passion, and persistence.
Our mission demands action — and we respond with purpose. Whether we are training women entrepreneurs, enrolling children in school, or planting trees in arid lands, we work tirelessly to deliver real results. We take pride in being hands-on, focused, and dependable, ensuring that no opportunity for impact is missed.
4. Professionalism
We uphold integrity, respect, and accountability.
We serve with honor and operate with transparency. Every interaction — with beneficiaries, partners, donors, and team members — is guided by mutual respect and ethical standards. We are accountable for the trust placed in us, and we strive to maintain the highest levels of excellence in all our operations.
These core values are not just ideals — they are lived out daily in our programs, partnerships, and people. They guide us as we:
Educate the next generation
Empower women with tools for independence
Respond to emergencies with compassion
Protect the vulnerable and promote justice
Restore the environment and invest in sustainability
At WEI, we don’t just talk about change — we build it, value by value.
