- Every Child Deserves a Chance to Learn.
In regions affected by conflict and displacement, education is often the first casualty — and the most devastating loss. For thousands of children in northeastern Nigeria, especially orphans and those displaced by insurgency, the classroom is out of reach. Without access to learning, their dreams are paused, and their futures uncertain.
At Wahatana Empowerment Initiative (WEI), we believe that education is a right, not a privilege — and we’re working to restore that right for every child we can reach.

The Crisis in numbers
Over 10.5 million children in Nigeria are out of school — many in the northeast.
Conflict and displacement have destroyed schools, disrupted learning, and left thousands of children without access to basic education.
Girls are especially at risk, with lower enrollment and higher dropout rates, particularly in rural communities.
When children are denied education, they are more vulnerable to child labor, early marriage, exploitation, and long-term poverty.
Our Response: Restoring Learning, Rebuilding Futures
WEI is working to bridge the education gap by bringing learning back to the children who need it most — through flexible, innovative, and community-rooted programs.
What We’re Doing
📚 Teach One Each One Program
Our flagship education initiative identifies out-of-school children — especially orphans and those in displaced families — and reintegrates them into learning through accelerated education, community classes, and mentorship.
✅ 1,200+ children enrolled in our programs to date
📍 Focus areas: Michika, Hong, and Yola North LGAs in Adamawa State
🏫 School Supplies & Learning Kits
We provide children with backpacks, uniforms, writing materials, and digital tools to remove the financial barriers that prevent many families from sending their children to school.
👩🏫 Community Educator Training
We train local volunteers and community leaders as educators and mentors to ensure culturally relevant, consistent, and sustainable learning in hard-to-reach areas.
🌐 Tech-Enabled Education
Using mobile and digital tools, we deliver learning content to students in low-connectivity areas, helping them continue education even in crisis or remote locations.
👧 Girls’ Education Advocacy
We engage parents, religious leaders, and local institutions to promote the importance of girls’ education and to challenge harmful norms that keep girls out of school.
Our Approach
Inclusive & Safe – Learning environments that welcome girls, displaced children, and children with disabilities.
Flexible & Mobile – Adapting to community realities through mobile classrooms, temporary learning centers, and home-based programs.
Sustainable & Local – Building the capacity of community educators and parents to support long-term learning beyond our direct interventions.
Integrated with Support – Combining education with health, nutrition, and psychosocial care to support the whole child.
